Bull Sharks eye redemption in ANZAC round showdowns

Anzac Day
2025 ANZAC Day round.

The Bull Sharks took home four promising wins last week against Tweed Tigers and Moreton Bay.

Now, they turn to the ANZAC Day round. The women take on Coorparoo at The Canal and there's some unfinished business after the Blues knocked us out of grand final contention last year.

The men take on their bogey team in Carrara - their only loss of the 2025 season. Carrara’s new home ground is Ormeau Sports Park which will play into the Bull Shark’s favour.

Last round - Bond v Tweed at Tweed - Bull Sharks won 15.16 (106) - 6.9 (45)

I thought we were good but rusty. Definitely dominated the contest in terms of ball in hand, but we had a lot of skill errors and missed goals. It was a very windy day, so we had to play against the breeze in the 2nd and 4th quarter. The role players just stood out for me -  Mitch Dowell and Liam Viney on the wings and Jed Kowald up forward.

Round Two

Bull Sharks v Carrara at Ormeau Sports Park

The opposition – Carrara are a bogey team for us, they're just a very hard, physical team but now their home ground is at Ormeau which is a bigger ground and so will play into our favour. They’re hard, they’re contested, we just need to get them on the outside and run them.

Jack Avage.

The challenge – Probably the conditions just with the rain coming, which will suit Carrara’s contested style.

Shuffling the magnets – Nick Francis and Miles Enders are probably going to play for Suns. Ned Spiden and Ned Betts are out. Tommy Wenzel will come in and debut in seniors. Jack Avage who kicked the sealer last year in the grand final has been a bit underdone in the preseason, so he just came through the reserves.

Ones to watch – Kane Emery would have had four goals from midfield and has about 30 touches. He’s a gun. Jed Kowald has improved so much, he's an important pressure forward for us.

The focus – Progression and growth. We don’t have to be the finished product until later in the year. We just need to show that we’ve gone to work on the things we were poor at last weekend.

The final word – We just really want to get this one.  They were our only loss last season, so we need to win on Saturday.

Last round - Bond v Moreton Bay at Moreton Bay - Bull Sharks won 11.14 (80) - 1.0 (6)

It was a particularly good win because Moreton Bay played a really defensive style, and they basically put all of their 16 players back in our forward line to stop us scoring. To work our way through that and win is promising. We lost our key recruit Tegan Williams for 10 -12 weeks with a shoulder injury.

Round Three

Bull Sharks v Coorparoo at The Canal

The opposition – They’ve had two very strong wins and they're one of the form teams of the competition. They ended our season last year here in a knockout final. They play an aggressive, physical style and they like the game played in tight.

The challenge –The challenge is going to be to try and get the ball to the outside and to absorb their physicality and maintain our composure.

Shuffling the magnets – We lose Tegan Williams so we have to find a replacement for her, which may mean that we push Maisy Evans and Millar Brosnan-Ball forward in a ruck rotation. We’re without our in-form midfielder Evie Reeves who has a foot injury. Grace Ella returns from personal leave.

One to watch – Kendra Blattman started to find some form up front and kicked three goals, if she can kick straight she gives a good target. Shannon Nolan was back to her brilliant best in the midfield. Maisy Evans continues to have a really strong season as a ruck/inside mid.

Maisy Evans is in fine form.

The focus – The focus is to play our style of footy and not be sucked in to reacting to Coorparoo’s physicality. We’ve played a really strong physical brand ourselves and we have to continue sharing the footy. It looks like there is going to be up to 25ml of rain on Saturday, so we need to adapt our mindset to wet weather footy.

Final word – We’ve had two solid wins but we face two tough opponents in Coorparoo and Morningside. It’s important to play a strong brand of footy and get the four points as it’s a really tight struggle at the top of the ladder between five fairly even teams.
