The Bond University Women's Rugby 7s team made history by winning a third consecutive Caslick Cup at Ballymore Stadium on the weekend.
The 26-10 grand final win over University of Queensland capped off a magical run for the Queensland Premier Rugby Hospital Cup winners who have now claimed every major 15s and 7s title over the past three years.
Heading into the State Championships, which was also the final round of the Caslick Cup, tied with rivals West in first place in the standings, the Bull Sharks knew it was a winner takes all event.
In their opening group games, played against Easts and Sunnybank, who head coach Lawrence Faifua described as their 'bogey' team, the side pulled out two hard-fought victories to progress to the final day of the tournament.
However, that night the girls found out that Wests were out of contention having been beaten on day one of the tournament.
The Caslick Cup was theirs.
Faifua said the girls were happy with winning the cup, but they knew that they needed to win the next day of the tournament to also win the state title.
"There was still pressure because they had to go back out there and do it the next day," he said.
"Lucky for us... they don't need much motivation, it is player driven and they knew what was at stake."
The second day of the tournament saw the girls defeat GPS 21-12 in the semi-final, before dominating UQ in the grand final.
Faifua has been the key driver of the development of the program for over five years, and while recognising his role in the success, he credits the players.
"Lots of teams say they have no egos... but that isn't really the case," he said.
"Out of all the teams I've coached, I can say this is the one team where you can see the connection amongst the girls... that's why they all keep coming back."
He also credits Bond University Deputy Director of Sport Luca Liussi, for his unwavering support of Women's Rugby at Bond University.
The Bond men also had a strong season, having won the Gold Coast Sevens and Brisvegas Elite.
They started the State Champions with a dominant day one, setting them on a semi-final collision course with UQ who they had handily beaten the week before.
In an intense battle, the score was tied 19-19 at the end of regulation, which saw Bond advance to the grand final against a hot Norths outfit with a superior for and against record.
Down 10-5 at the half, the Bull Sharks were able to tie the game 10-10 at the end of regulation, in what was a very tough defensive contest.
Ultimately, they were downed in golden point, robbing them of the chance to make some history of their own.
Despite falling short at the final hurdle, Beil and the team were happy with the season.
"Overall, we are happy on the whole... but you still want to win," he said.
