Bull Sharks bounce back against Aspley

Maisy Evans starred in the win over Aspley

The Bull Sharks unbeaten start to the QFA season came to an end at the hands of a physical Carrara outfit in round 5.

But in the QAFLW, the girls got back in the winner’s circle with a strong performance on the road against Aspley.

QAFLW

Bull Sharks v Aspley at Aspley

Bull Sharks won 7.5 (47) - 4.7 (31)

How it was won

We absorbed their contested pressure really well and we were able to lock the ball inside the forward half of our ground and limit their ability to get the ball inside their forward 50. It was a really wet and slippery game, but we handled the ball particularly well by hand and foot.

What made you happy

It was the evenness of our performance, everyone played their role, and everyone chimed in on offence and defence.

Bull Sharks Footy

The contest and pressure up until three quarter time. Unfortunately, it felt like we dropped away in the fourth quarter and let them have some scoring shots.

The work to do

Our ability to get the ball out of contest and into open space still needs work. Too often we handball to teammates still in the contest which draws opposition pressure. These handballs need to be releasing players into space.

Trademark players

Evy Reeves had her best game for club and Maisy Evans was terrific in the ruck and around the ground in general play and weas rewarded with the QAFLW Rising Star award for the round. Skye White at fullback was impassable and Leah Kaslar gave us real strength and aggression around the stoppages, she was a big in for us with her experience and strength.

Bull Sharks v Carrara at Carrara

Bull Sharks lost 6.11 (47) - 4.10 (34)

How it was lost

We certainly weren’t at our best on the weekend, in most facets of the game we were beaten. Carrara play their ground very well and are hard to beat at home and this was evident from the outset. We didn’t match their pressure, and we were second to the footy for most of the day.

What made you happy

We played poorly although we never looked to be out of the game and only went down by a small margin. We did compete although we looked reactive at times which hurt us.

Bull Sharks Footy

The weekend’s performance was nothing like the footy we have played this season. We were a mile away from the way we know we can play. There were many learnings from the weekend which is the wonderful thing about this time of year. We go again and get back to work.

The work to do

There is plenty of work to do to recalibrate and get back to our winning ways. Our one wood is our run and carry and ball-use. There are no excuses, however the oval at Carrara was a mud heap and took these strengths away from us. We didn’t adjust to the physicality of the game and Carrara got on top.

Trademark players

Most weeks it is a challenge to narrow it down to just one or two players as there have been so many strong performers. This week it is tough to find one. Jack Avage tried his heart out as always, and relished the physicality of the game.
