Big win and tough loss on mixed weekend for the Bull Sharks

Miles Enders
Miles Enders

It was a mixed bag for the Bull Sharks in Round 10 with the QFA side racking up a huge win over Beenleigh, while the QAFLW outfit showed real fight but ultimately fell short against Morningside.

In what could only be described as a scrappy contest, the QFA men still managed to record a whopping 132-point win, with big man Josh Lanham impressing in his senior call-up and elite performers Nick Francis and Miles Enders, with a game high seven goals, continuing their standout seasons.

The women, meanwhile, bounced back from a tough previous week to produce a much-improved effort. Led by the adaptable and ever-reliable Evy Reeves, Bond brought their game style and intensity to the contest but couldn’t convert at key moments and were punished at the centre bounce.

With a handful of first-choice midfielders still out, the signs remain positive — but the work continues. Max Kennedy and Andy Lovell break all the action down in this week’s footy wrap.

QFA

Bull Sharks v Beenleigh

Bull Sharks won 23.20 (158) – 3.4 (22).

How it was won

This certainly wasn’t a game for the ages. In a scrappy affair, we managed to kick a massive score to win the game convincingly. There were patches in the game where we looked slick, although there were too many periods which are best forgotten.

What made you happy

We were happy with the size of the win. We didn’t go into the game with any preconceived idea of the opposition, the focus was to ensure we maintained our standards and play to professionally. For parts of the game, we did this but there were periods where we dropped off which we need to remedy this weekend. We were happy that we finished the game playing the correct way.

Bull Sharks Footy

The big bruiser Josh Lanham came into the team this week to play in the ruck and was terrific. He’s a super popular member of the Bull Sharks and getting a senior call up was just reward for the energy and effort he brings to the club.

The work to do

There wasn’t a sense we lowered our colours but there were moments where we drifted away from our game. This was a combination of the oppositions pressure or lack thereof at times and our mindset. Hardnosed professional teams don’t go away from what’s a proven methodology, at times we did which we need to fix up.

Trademark Players

Once again Miles Enders and Nick Francis led the way with their effort and run. These two players are elite talents and are almost impossible for the opposition to stop. It is no surprise given the way they prepare and the professionalism they show week on week.

Bull Sharks v Morningside

Maisy Evans
Maisy Evans was among the best for the Bull Sharks

Bull Sharks lost 6.4 (40) – 4.3 (27)

Where it was lost

It was a much improved effort by the girls compared to the previous week. We brought very good contest and fought hard all game. The difference was we lacked consistent avenues to goal and we failed to ice the critical moments in the game when we had opportunities to stretch our lead mid-way through the third quarter.

The highlight

Maisy Evans made a brilliant tackle in our forward 50m and she coolly nailed a set shot goal from 40m out to get us back within one goal.

What made you happy

The fact that we rebounded strongly and brought our game style to the contest. We won every statistic except centre bounce clearances which proved costly in the end. Overall, our game style was strong.

Bull Sharks Footy

We were tough and uncompromising in our attack on the footy, but we let ourselves down with our finishing in front of goal at critical moments. This allowed the momentum to shift their way.

The work to do

We must address our set ups and contest work at centre bounces as we’ve been beaten in this part of the game the last two weeks. While we have been missing the majority of our starting midfield during those losses, it has been a great opportunity for others to step up and lead the way in there.

Trademark Player

Evy Reeves continued her stellar season with another polished performance, this time on a wing. It is adaptability and a high football IQ that has made her a critical member of the team. Her ability to play a variety of roles is testament to her high level of team care and her all round football talent.
