Bend it like Bull Sharks

When the siren sounded on the 2024 senior women division 1 football Grand Final, it was Kingscliff 2  - Bond 1.

The Bull Sharks were disappointed, but no one else was really surprised considering the squad didn’t even start the season in the division.

It was something from a fairytale, a team at the start of 2024 with not enough players to fill a roster and playing in division 2. Fast forward to September and they were there head-to-head in the Grand Final of division 1.

But its 2025 now and no longer the underdogs of the competition the Bull Shark women have been on fire, claiming the minor premiership with a game to spare before finals.

Their previous rivals in Kingscliff have moved divisions, and so with a question mark over who will be the competition top dog, the Bull Sharks have filled the shoes.

Tilly Handforth won the competition for goal of the month in July for her long-range effort against Tweed and Sian Houston who is the squad’s top goal scorer, is also in contention for top goal scorer of the league.

Not to be outdone, the Bull Shark male counterparts are also sitting at the top of the Division 1 ladder with a final game to go.

The club is now daring to dream of a double premiership celebration.

For president Evan Poon, who has been with the club since starting at Bond in 2022, the success has been a long time coming.

“We were close to the bottom of the ladder when I arrived at Bond, and they were looking for players,” Poon said.

“Now we have three full men's teams with a waitlist of players.

“There’s lots of people who love to play football.

“I think people just didn’t know about the club, and having so much success over the past two seasons, I think it’s spread awareness and that's why we have so much interest now.”
