Graduate Certificate in Family Dispute Resolution

Where will your degree take you?

Graduates of the course will be equipped to apply to the relevant accreditation bodies for accreditation. This is a process managed by individual graduates.

Graduates can work in several different roles within the dispute resolution profession as either a mediator or family dispute resolution practitioner.

Mediator

A mediator helps people manage and resolve disputes and conflict. Mediators facilitate a structured process to enable the parties to communicate appropriately and reach consensual outcomes.

FDR Practitioner

A Family Dispute Resolution Practitioner (FDRP) is a specialist dispute resolution person who helps parents who have separated to manage and resolve disputes and conflict about parenting and property matters. FDRP Mediators facilitate a structured process to enable the parties to communicate appropriately and reach consensual outcomes. Accredited FDRPs can have the authority to issue relevant certificates under the Family Law Act.

Professional accreditation

Successful completion of the Graduate Certification in Family Dispute Resolution will allow you to gain accreditation as a Mediator through the National Mediations Standards Board (NMAS) and a Family Dispute Resolution practitioner with the Federal Attorney General's Department.

- Demonstrate the knowledge, skills and understanding of ethical principles set out in Cl 10.1 of the National Mediator Accreditation System and the capacity to fulfil the obligations of Family Dispute Resolution Practitioners set out in the Family Law Act and Regulations
- Demonstrate the capacity to be a professional and ethical family mediator: a. able to interact and engage with others appropriately, be impartial, and empower others to resolve their disputes; and b. committed to achieving an outcome in the best interests of children, the future efficacy of the family relationships and maximising the family’s capacity to function and thrive regardless of the outcome.
