Student surfs into Bond to fulfil high school dream

Finally after eight years, Nick Pfeffer is turning his high school dreams into reality, and will commence his Doctor of Physiotherapy in May 2009.

Back in 2002 with over of one year of study completed at Griffith University, Nick made the decision to defer his studies and embarked on a five year world surfing trip.

Five years later after riding the waves through America, Asia and the Pacific Islands, Nick made the decision to return home.

“I felt a career in the surf industry was not rewarding and decided to finish my studies, so I could realise my high school career goal of becoming a Physiotherapist”.

Returning home to Australia, Nick enrolled in Bond University’s Bachelor of Exercise science, to take advantage of the small class sizes, tri-semester study and highly credentialing staff.

Juggling both full-time work and study was a balancing act, but Nick is happy with his decision to complete his Bachelor of Exercise Science at Bond University. Now in his final semester, Nick is looking forward to starting the Doctor oh Physiotherapy in May 2009.

The Bachelor of Exercise Science is a vertically integrated program that provides students with solid knowledge in the basic, clinical and applied sciences, providing the necessary foundation for successful further study in the Doctor of Physiotherapy.

A highlight of his Bachelor of Exercise Science was the completion of an internship at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital in the Cardiac Investigations Unit. Nick participated in ECG nuclear medicine stress testing, exercise stress testing, Holter analysis and observing Echo and angioplasties.

“Clinical placements are an integrated part of Bond University Health Sciences and Medicine degrees, giving students valuable learning experiences within their chosen fields” said Professor Greg Gass.

Nick agrees, “It was a great opportunity to apply theory we were taught from lectures and gain practical experience in a clinical setting”.

“The internship also helped to confirm my career direction and reassured that the path I was taking was the correct one. I gained new personal and professional skills and look forward to applying these when I begin my Doctor of Physiotherapy in 2009.”
