Bond Sevens gunning for glory on Gold Coast home turf

NEWS FLASH: Bond University Sevens team took out the bronze medal at the fourth & final tournament of the Women’s Aon Uni Sevens Series on the last weekend of September and was awarded the silver medal for finishing second in the overall series. More details to come soon....

Bond University’s Sevens team is hoping to continue its medal-winning ways at the fourth and final tournament of the Women’s Aon Uni Sevens Series, which is being played on Bond’s home turf this Friday 29 and Saturday 30 September.

So far this series, Bond has scored two silvers and a bronze, putting them in second place overall behind UQ.

Head Coach Ben Gollings said he was hoping to finish on a high note.

“The quality of rugby has been building throughout the series, so spectators can expect to see the best, and fiercest, matches to date this weekend - it’s going to be a strong race to the finish line,” he said.

“This weekend’s tournament will be an awesome opportunity to showcase sevens to the country, and for the people of the Gold Coast and south-east Queensland to witness first-hand the calibre of our local players, and just how far they’ve come.

“Playing alongside Aussie legends Charlotte Caslick and Brooke Walker and going up against the rest of the girls from the Australian team has been an incredible learning opportunity for our newer sevens players.

“For them to have exposure to that level of rugby, has made them stronger and given them a real taste of what’s it like to play at an elite level.”

Executive Director of Sport, Garry Nucifora said Bond University was very proud to be hosting the final tournament of the series on the Gold Coast.

“Bond University is heavily invested in, and supportive of, the inaugural Aon 7s series, and has done a lot of work in recent years to develop women’s rugby from a grassroot, community level through to an elite level,” he said.

“As a significant influencer in the inception of this series, it’s great to see the fruits of our labour and an honour to be hosting the final matches.

“The women who will be representing Australia in the women’s sevens at the Commonwealth Games next year on the Gold Coast will all be here at Bond this weekend, and playing their hearts out to be crowned the inaugural Aon Women’s University Sevens Champion.”

Bond University will take on Macquarie University, University of Adelaide and Griffith University in the pool games on the Gold Coast on Friday 29 September.

Matches kick off at Bond University Rugby Field at 1.00pm (AEST) on Friday 29 September with every match to be streamed LIVE through www.rugby.com.au.

Entry is free for everyone on Friday, and free for Bond University staff and students on Saturday 30 September too.

On Saturday, entry is $5 for the general public - which will include not just the semis and final of the Aon Women’s University Sevens Series (which kick-off at 10.00am), but also the final of the National U16s (1.40pm), the National Rugby Championship’s Bond University Queensland Country vs Melbourne Rising match (3.00pm) and the final of the Junior Gold Cup Competition (5.00pm) – as part of Bond University’s Super Saturday festival of rugby.
