Bond PhD student to advise industry in Europe about sustainability in the property sector

Institute of Sustainable Development and Architecture PhD student Mr Peter Glynn will join an expert panel formed to advise on the design of a value chain strategy related to energy efficiency and value in buildings.

The project, titled “TRAINREBUILD: training for rebuilding Europe” aims to encourage retrofitting in the wide range of residential buildings, spanning from individual to multi-family houses and from private to social housing.

The two year project is funded by the European Commission and is aimed at property owners and local authorities in Europe. The project is managed by a partnership of representative organisations addressing the whole value chain of the building sector.

“The project targets the high greenhouse gas emitting building sector, acknowledging the substantial reductions that can be made through energy efficiency initiatives. A key strategy in achieving the targeted reductions is capacity building through training of public and private sector property owners and managers,” said Mr Glynn.

“The long term purpose is to create a significant European dimension to foster market transformation in the building sector and develop a scale effect to reach a 20% reduction in CO2 emissions and 20% share in renewable energy in the built environment by 2020.”

Mr Glynn recently returned to Australia after being involved in climate policy and green job activities with the International Labour Organisation and the International Organisation of Employers in Geneva. Mr Glynn is undertaking his PhD at Bond and will research the employment and workplace impacts of climate change policy.

The invitation to join the European expert panel is recognition of Mr Glynn’s expertise and his current research. He believes this project will provide a model that could be replicated in Australia.
