Bond brings birds back to conservation area

Bond University has created a new home for some of the local feathered and scaled species with an area dedicated to encouraging wildlife on to campus.

The Bond University Bird Sanctuary and Conservation Area, established in partnership with Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary was officially opened on June 27, 2012.

The area located next to the University’s Lake Orr was prepared earlier this year to make way for a delivery of more than 30 species of plants, including some rare and endangered natives.

Following the delivery and planting almost two months ago, the area is thriving and project manager Siarna O’Malley says she is excited to see the area develop further as a habitat for the wildlife.

“It’s really great to see the conservation area flourishing, we’ve already seen up to 10 water birds resting in the area at any given time; and just recently, a visit from some black swans and their baby to Lake Orr,” explained Siarna.

The official opening recognised and thanked Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary for their support and contribution.
