SDCM71-316: Structures and Materials

Description

This subject provides students from non-engineering backgrounds with a basic understanding of building structures and soil mechanics. Fundamental structural engineering concepts such as calculation of forces and reactions, properties of common construction materials, bending moments and shear forces are introduced. Structural principles encompassing Strength, Serviceability and Stability are covered. Soil properties are examined, and foundation systems introduced.

Learning outcomes

  1. Identify, critically analyse and interpret external loading on structures to element form and structural components;
  2. Apply the fundamentals of equilibrium and stress to perform simple calculations;
  3. Describe and critically analyse the properties of technically reliable structural materials and their appropriate use within the built environment; and
  4. Define, discuss and interpret appropriate foundation options based on an evaluation of soil properties.

Assumed knowledge:

Assumed knowledge is the minimum level of knowledge of a subject area that students are assumed to have acquired through previous study. It is the responsibility of students to ensure they meet the assumed knowledge expectations of the subject. Students who do not possess this prior knowledge are strongly recommended against enrolling and do so at their own risk. No concessions will be made for students’ lack of prior knowledge.
