Description
This subject introduces students to the increasing and important role of design within a global and multidisciplinary context. Students will learn fundamental design principles and design elements such as colour, typography, line, shape and form as foundations for understanding of the aesthetic, functional and social applications of design. They will apply these principles, using industry standard software, such as Adobe Photoshop, to the process of design and effective communication in a digital environment.

Learning outcomes
1. Have a solid comprehension of fundamental design principles combined with a theoretical understanding of influencing factors in design communication, and be able to apply these philosophies to design requirements in a professional context.
2. Have a solid comprehension of fundamental design principles including gestalt laws, layout, colour and typography and be able to apply these in a practical context.
3. Demonstrate competent use of industry standard software (Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator) to design, create and manipulate a variety of digital designs.
4. Critically assess and apply strategies for the effective use of the theory and practical skills taught in this subject to either pre-press or on-screen applications of design communication.
5. Communicate fundamental design principles and design strategies with industry professionals in a global context.
