Working in medicine, allied health, or even medical education can provide incredibly dynamic, challenging, interesting and fulfilling careers. However, many students aren’t aware of the opportunities available to them in healthcare and there are many pathways other than medicine and nursing that allow graduates to work in a hospital environment, and with patients, but so many high school students remain unaware of this.
To assist senior school students in understanding what a career in health entails, Bond University runs the Health Experience Day. Working in groups, students take management of a specific patient. In most cases this is an actor who plays a simulated role, but in others it is a robotic manikin which breathes, coughs, has a pulse and other measurable vitals.

Working in groups, students take management of a specific patient. To manage the patient correctly, students hear reports from real healthcare professionals: Dietitians, Surgeons, GPs,Occupational Therapists, Nutritionists, Physiotherapists, Exercise and Biomedical Scientists. This will help their understanding of how these professions interact with and assist the patient under their care. Whether its dealing with a patient who has lung cancer, a young girl after a stroke, a lady with dementia, or a man after a car accident, attendees engage and assist these patients using their compassion, insights and prior knowledge, as well as their communications with the patient’s healthcare team
As part of the day, within our simulated hospital, participants will also learn how to take blood pressure, temperature, pulse rate, and oximetry amongst others. One-one-one learning of these skills from real doctors, and professionals who are there to help.
Preparing students to study for a career in health
One-on-one learning of these skills from real doctors and professionals who are there to help, provides students with an enhanced understanding of healthcare, a greater set of skills and ability and more insight into which career prospects they might like to pursue as they finish school and continue with the next stage of their educational journey.
