PHTY74-100: Physiotherapy: Research Internship

Description

In Physiotherapy: Research Internship students will develop advanced research skills in one or more of the following physiotherapy practice areas: clinical skills, research translation, administration, leadership, program and policy development, advocacy, education or theory development. This community-based internship builds upon the background research proposal and pilot project completed in pre-requisite coursework during the Doctor of Physiotherapy, including Evidence Based Practice Research subjects, physiotherapy coursework and clinical placements. Under the supervision of an academic mentor and in collaboration with an industry partner, students will undertake an independent scholarly study that meets their personal learning objectives and contributes to new knowledge in the field. The duration of the capstone doctoral internship is a minimum of 12 weeks or equivalent to 60 days/450 hours and provides the foundation for the subsequent development of a doctoral thesis.

Learning outcomes

  1. Using authoritative judgement, formulate integrated personal learning goals to guide ongoing critical reflection during the capstone experience.
  2. Design a rigorous scholarly research study that demonstrates independent inquiry and responds to current health and/or industry priorities
  3. Disseminate research findings through scholarly outputs for professional, peer-reviewed, or industry contexts, demonstrating advanced communication skills
  4. Implement ethical, culturally responsive, and professionally accountable research practices to design a capstone project and produce rigorous scholarly documentation.

Assumed knowledge is the minimum level of knowledge of a subject area that students are assumed to have acquired through previous study. It is the responsibility of students to ensure they meet the assumed knowledge expectations of the subject. Students who do not possess this prior knowledge are strongly recommended against enrolling and do so at their own risk. No concessions will be made for students’ lack of prior knowledge.

Completion of all requirements of the Doctor of Physiotherapy program.
