LAWS77-793: Trial Advocacy

Description

Trial Advocacy is a later stage elective subject in postgraduate programs offered by the Faculty of Law. Students enrolled in this subject will learn the practical skills necessary to enable them to represent a client in a trial, either civil or criminal. Upon completion of the subject, students will be able to conduct trial proceedings effectively and with due regard to ethical considerations.

Learning outcomes

  1. Demonstrate detailed knowledge and accurately apply some fundamental rules of evidence, trial procedure and trial advocacy.
  2. Demonstrate exemplary ethical behaviour including compliance with professional standards and rules of court when conducting a trial and during pre-trial proceedings.
  3. Identify and critically analyse complex legal issues and apply the substantive law to those legal issues.
  4. Present detailed oral and written arguments and conduct thorough examinations consistent with trial advocacy principles.

Assumed knowledge is the minimum level of knowledge of a subject area that students are assumed to have acquired through previous study. It is the responsibility of students to ensure they meet the assumed knowledge expectations of the subject. Students who do not possess this prior knowledge are strongly recommended against enrolling and do so at their own risk. No concessions will be made for students’ lack of prior knowledge.
