LAWS17-810: Fundamentals of Legal Design

Description

Fundamentals of Legal Design is an elective subject in postgraduate programs offered by the Faculty of Law in which undergraduate students may be permitted to enrol. The subject is an examination of the emerging discipline of legal design and how it is shaping the evolution of legal services and legal products in the digital era. Students will learn about the fundamentals of legal design: what it is, tools and methods (including those leveraging GenAI), how to implement the legal design process to deliver value, and how to take a data-driven approach to legal design.

Learning outcomes

  1. Demonstrate advanced and integrated understanding of the principles of legal design to problem-solving in contemporary legal practice.
  2. Apply and critically evaluate the key phases in the legal design process, using advanced design methods to create innovative solutions to legal challenges.
  3. Identify and assess appropriate metrics to evaluate the value and impact of legal design projects.

Assumed knowledge:

Assumed knowledge is the minimum level of knowledge of a subject area that students are assumed to have acquired through previous study. It is the responsibility of students to ensure they meet the assumed knowledge expectations of the subject. Students who do not possess this prior knowledge are strongly recommended against enrolling and do so at their own risk. No concessions will be made for students’ lack of prior knowledge.

Must have completed a minimum 120 Credit Points of LAWS subjects AND have a minimum average of 65% in LAWS subjects. Students must be admitted into a Bachelor of Laws degree or Bachelor of Laws combined degree or be an approved Law Study Abroad OR Law exchange student.

This subject is not available as a general elective. To be eligible for enrolment, the subject must be specified in the students’ program structure.
