JOUR13-315: Video Journalism

Description

This subject immerses you in television and video journalism through hands-on experience in both field and studio environments. In the field, you will learn to plan, film, edit and produce original news and feature packages for TV and video audiences, applying core journalistic principles and visual storytelling techniques. Then, in state-of-the-art studio facilities, you will work in front of and behind the camera to experience the roles of reporter, presenter, executive producer, editor and camera and control room operations. Emphasis is placed on: integrating ethical and legal standards; tailoring content for diverse audiences; creatively adapting to the formats, platforms and workflows of professional television journalism; and creating meaningful, original TV and video content that can be published across platforms.

Learning outcomes

  1. Critically evaluate and apply news values and principles of broadcast storytelling to the selection and production of television and video news and feature stories.
  2. Synthesise research, scripting, filming and editing techniques to produce original, ethically sound and audience-appropriate television and video journalism content.
  3. Apply legal, ethical and editorial frameworks when creating television or video news and feature stories.
  4. Collaboratively plan, produce, and deliver television news content within simulated newsroom and studio settings, demonstrating leadership, teamwork and adaptability.
  5. Execute and critically reflect on various studio, editorial and field reporting roles including presenting, directing and technical operations, to simulate real-world broadcast production workflows.
