JOUR12-100: Podcasting and Audio Narratives

Description

In this subject, you will learn how to find, plan and create stories for the fast-growing podcast industry. This will include writing clear, conversational audio scripts; recording voice and natural sound; editing and mixing; layering sound effects and atmosphere; presenting and narration; publishing in on-demand digital formats; and pitching to media outlets or sponsors. Through in-class exercises and assessment, you will explore a range of podcast audio formats (including chatcasts, interviews, panels, news stories and audio features/documentaries), then build a portfolio of your own audio artefacts. The course will also explore radio and audio theory and traditions, examining the evolving impacts of podcasting on the media landscape.

Learning outcomes

  1. Develop and produce engaging podcast stories through planning, research, writing and editing for distribution via on-demand platforms.
  2. Harness established and emerging digital technologies to record, edit and distribute podcasts and audio stories.
  3. Recognise and leverage industry trends to develop audio career opportunities and apply audio storytelling to a range of professional disciplines.
  4. Create a unique audio presence through the articulation of personal voice and thematic focus.
  5. Critically evaluate podcasts with an awareness of theory, tradition, cultural contexts and the storyteller’s ethical and legal obligations.
