EXPH11-105: Assessment, Prescription and Delivery of Exercise 1

Description

This foundational subject bridges the gap between scientific theory and professional practice. Aligned with ESSA Accredited Exercise Scientist standards, students master the end-to-end process of client management: from pre-exercise screening and risk stratification to comprehensive fitness assessment and the design of safe, evidence-based "first-dose" exercise prescriptions. Using a longitudinal "Anchor Case" model, students apply physiological and biomechanical principles to design programs for general populations, addressing cardiorespiratory fitness, muscular strength, and flexibility. The curriculum emphasises professional documentation, culturally safe communication, and the practical instruction skills required to work effectively as a future Exercise Physiologist.

  • Health, Biomedical, and Sport Sciences

Learning outcomes

  1. Justify the selection of valid, reliable, and feasible screening and assessment tools for diverse client contexts, ensuring cultural and physical safety.
  2. Execute safe pre-exercise screening and submaximal testing protocols with industry-standard risk stratification and escalation procedures.
  3. Design an initial "first-dose" exercise prescription for a novice client, incorporating assessment data, Frequency, Intensity, Type and Time (FITT) exercise prescription principles, and explicit progression/regression criteria.
  4. Execute exercise instruction by applying evidence-based cueing hierarchies and adapting communication strategies to match client health literacy, cognitive capacity and psychological readiness.
  5. Document clinical decisions, screening outcomes, and program evaluations to meet professional, ethical, and legal record-keeping standards.
