Law of the rings

Fighting.

The law.

The two constants in Jack Javed’s life.

Once the source of trouble, now the foundation of his future.

At 21, the professional boxer is studying for a Bachelor of Laws while preparing for his biggest fight yet - it is a long way from the teenager who had a habit of finding trouble.

“I’d probably be in jail,” he says.

Before stepping into the ring for a morning spar at Fiteklub Burleigh, Javed works his way around the gym one handshake at a time, greeting training partners, coaches and spectators with quiet warmth.

Nobody receives more than a few seconds of his attention, but everybody receives it.

The pleasantries are short-lived.

When the timer chimes to begin Round 1, Javed stalks forward behind a stiff jab.

His right-hand lands clean, spraying sweat from his opponent’s sodden headguard.

The air is thick with the sour tang of damp cotton.

The control on display today is the product of years in the making.

Few people understand that journey better than his trainer, Paul Briggs, a former WBC world title contender.

Perched on the ring apron, Briggs has spent the past six years watching Javed transform from a restless 15-year-old searching for direction into one of Australia’s emerging professional boxing talents.

Long before title cards and rankings, Briggs recognised something in the teenager.

Javed liked to fight.

He still remembers the phone call.

“A gentleman rang me and said, ‘I’ve got a kid that you might think is pretty good at boxing, but you’d have to have a look at him.’”

Briggs saw a young man with plenty of aggression but nowhere productive to direct it.

“I said, ‘You’re a long time dead from doing something stupid. If you want to explore that side of yourself, if you want to be a warrior, get paid to do it.’”

The message stuck.

Training replaced trouble. Routine replaced restlessness.

These days, Javed’s fighting takes place under lights, inside ropes and within rules. He faces off against an opponent, not a potential victim.

In a few hours, he will be taking notes in a law lecture. Seated on the gym floor, Javed explains why the two worlds are not as different as they first appear.

“It’s tactics, 100 per cent,” he says.

Whether preparing for a fight or arguing a case, he believes success comes down to staying composed under pressure.

When asked what keeps him motivated through two training sessions a day, six days a week, he dismisses the idea entirely.

“There is no such thing as motivation, you just get there and get it done.”

That mindset has carried him quickly through professional ranks.

On 24 June, Javed will fight on the IBF Welterweight World Title undercard at Brisbane’s Pat Rafter Arena – the biggest opportunity of his career so far.

Standing opposite him will be Lance “G-Banger” McDonald, one of the domestic circuit’s more recognisable personalities.

Javed is unconcerned by reputations.

“He’s just another person in the way of my goals,” he says. “It’ll be a quick, brutal show.”

For Briggs, Javed’s rapid rise has come as little surprise.

He has watched plenty of fighter’s stumble when opportunities arrive. Javed, he says, has kept moving forward.

His prediction for where it all leads is simple.

“World champion.”

For now, Javed’s attention remains fixed on a Wednesday night under lights in the last week of June.

The next fight.

The next step.

Jack Javed will fight Lance McDonald on the undercard of the Crocker vs Paro IBF Welterweight Championship bout at Pat Rafter Arena in Brisbane on 24 June.
