Bull Sharks on paths to finals

AFL
Gabrielle Deller contests the ball.

There are road trips in store for all Bull Sharks teams this weekend as they embark on round 14.

The women’s teams travel to Brisbane to take on the Coorparoo Kings, while the men face the Coomera Magpies at Coomera.

The senior men have been making waves on the QFA ladder, currently occupying the coveted first-place position.

Bond, Carrara, and Burleigh have all won nine games and lost two, but the Bull Sharks’ 189.56 percentage calculation keeps them firmly in the lead.

On the other hand, with only two games remaining in their regular season, the senior women have guaranteed their spot in the QAFLW finals and are sitting in second place on the ladder.

Here’s what you need to know.

Last time they met

The senior men last faced Coomera in round 5 where they secured a dominant 85-36 victory.

Meanwhile, the senior women’s team hasn’t crossed paths with Coorparoo since round 2, where Bond emerged victorious 29-17.

Since their previous encounters both the men and women’s teams have improved significantly.

Director of AFL and senior women’s coach Andy Lovell lauded the Bull Sharks’ work ethic.

“They just work so hard,” Lovell said.

“We identify an area that we need to improve on, and they put their everything into it.”

Focus points

As the Bull Sharks prepare for these crucial matchups they have been working on key areas.

The senior women have been improving their entries inside 50, which paid off following their round 13 victory where they took 15 marks inside their 50.

Both teams have also been honing stoppage work during centre bounces, ball-ups, and throw-ins.

Who’s in, who’s out

The senior women lose nine of their players to the state team this weekend.

Despite this, coach Lovell is excited to provide the reserves players with an opportunity in the senior team.

“A whole heap of other girls who have been playing really well in our reserves get to play some seniors footy,” he said.

“We still have five of our academy girls available this weekend but there’s also quite a few of our non-academy girls who are in really good form – so we’ve got a great selection to pick from.”

The men’s side will see some returning faces.

Key forward Matthew Smith is back after missing the Bull Sharks’ last game due to illness and Axel Moore will make his comeback after missing the previous few weeks due to injury.

It is still unknown if star backline player Will King will play out the rest of the season as he awaits specialist advice following his shoulder dislocation in round 12.
