The Bull Sharks women have booked their spot in the QAFLW finals with a commanding 11.8 (74) to 7.3 (45) win over the Aspley Hornets.

Continuing their eight-week winning streak, the victory solidifies Bond’s second place on the ladder.

With only three games remaining in the 2023 regular season, the Bull Sharks have confirmed their seat in the QAFLW finals.

How it unfolded

The Bull Sharks asserted their authority from the outset, kicking the first goal of the game 12 seconds after the centre bounce.

They continued to pile on the pressure, adding two more goals to their tally before the Hornets managed their first points at the 10-minute mark.

While Bond managed only one goal during the second quarter, they maintained a comfortable 45-19 advantage.

There were three more Bull Sharks goals in the third quarter but even though Aspley regained momentum with points of their own, their opponents’ first quarter blitz meant they struggled to bridge the gap.

During the final quarter the pace of the game slowed as the Bull Sharks’ relentless pursuit of the ball kept the Hornets on the back foot.

Standout performers

Midfielders Christy Landwehr, Jasmyn Davidson and Courtney Sexton were outstanding while Tara Harrington, Ava Usher and Havana Harris showed incredible tenacity around the ball in Bond’s forward lines, contributing greatly to the team’s dominance.

Kiara Bischa displayed her defensive prowess in the Bull Sharks’ backlines, putting herself on the line in critical moments to get the ball out of the danger zone and back towards Bond’s scoring end.

What they said

Despite some inconsistencies in their connection, head coach Andy Lovell was pleased with the Bull Sharks’ performance.

“It was a great win against a really good team and I thought our effort was outstanding,” Lovell said.

“We scored six goals in our first quarter, so that really set up our win.

“I was a little disappointed with the way that we finished off.

“I think our connection was a little bit off, but overall the girls worked really hard all game long and it was an outstanding win.”

In other games

It was victories across all Bull Sharks grades as the reserves women secured a convincing victory in their game against Aspley, 13.9 (87) to 4.3 (27).

Similarly, the senior men’s team triumphed over Robina with a score of 12.9 (81) to 7.6 (48) and the reserves men won 13.9 (87) to 7.9 (51).
