The Bond University Swimming Club experienced its most successful State titles results to date when it finished in the top 10 clubs at the 2015 McDonaldâs Qld Championships recently.
With just 26 swimmers, Bond Swimming finished in ninth position overall, ahead of another 150+ swim squads, many of whom fielded much larger teams.
Of Bondâs 26 swimmers, 19 made the finals and 8 swimmers medalled in individual events, with five swimmers taking out the title of âState Championâ.
Bondâs newly crowned State Champions include:
- Cameron Mc Evoy - menâs 50m, 100m and 200m freestyle
- Brayden McCarthy - 17 years 100m freestyle and 100m butterfly
- Elijah Winnington â 15 years 100m, 200m and 400m freestyle (a new Qld record), 200m butterfly and 200m individual medley. Elijah was also named Qld Age Champion; an award he has won for the past 5 years in a row.
- Jack Sparke - 13 years 100m and 200m backstroke
- Charlie Beech - 11 years 100m breaststroke
Bond Swimmingâs menâs relay team â Will Harmsen, Jamie Sturgeon, Brayden McCarthy and Cameron McEvoy - also set a new Qld record and took out the gold medal in the 4 x 100m freestyle relay.
Bond University Swimming Club President, Jeff Winnington said he was thrilled with the squadâs performance.
âWe knew going into the State Championships that we were in good shape and looking strong, and thanks to an awesome performance by a number of our up-and-coming young swimmers, we were very pleased to finish in the top 10,â Mr Winnington said.
âFor such a small squad, we really packed a punch. This is without a doubt our strongest performance at a State Championship event and bodes very well for Bond Swimming in 2016.â
Next month Cameron McEvoy will take on south-east Asiaâs strongest swimmers as part of the BHP Aquatic Super Series in Perth and in April a squad from Bond University Swimming Club will head to Adelaide for the 2016 Rio Olympic Trials.
