Bond Swimming scores Top 10 finish at National Championships

Bond University Swimming Club (BUSC) had its best ever result at this year’s Hancock Prospecting Short Course Championships, finishing seventh in the country at the annual national swim meet.

The entire team performed brilliantly, with two Bondies – Alex Graham and Brayden McCarthy – named in the Australian team to compete at the upcoming World Short Course Championships in Windsor, Canada in early December.

Dual Olympic medallist, Cam McEvoy, defended and won his ‘triple crown’ by bagging gold medals in the 200m, 100m and 50m freestyle events, replicating his success at last year’s event.

BUSC Assistant Coach, Kyle Samuelson said he and Head Coach Richard Scarce were very proud of the squad’s performance.

“For a small club, Bond continues to punch above its weight at national and international meets, with even our younger swimmers getting great results up against competitors several years older than them,” he said.

“This is the first time we have finished in the top ten at the national Short Course Championships, which is a fantastic result and a tribute to the effort and dedication of our swimmers who give their all each and every training session.

“We are definitely ‘one to watch’ at the State Short Course Championships in Brisbane next month.”

The Club’s performance highlights included:

• Amy Forrester – silver in the 200m backstroke and 6th in the 100m backstroke
• Jenna Strauch – made two finals and finished 4th in the 200m breaststroke
• Elijah Winnington – 5th in the 400m freestyle (at just 16 years of age)
• Brayden McCarthy – bronze in the 100m freestyle and 4th in the 100m butterfly (qualifying for the Australian team for this event)
• Alex Graham – 5th in the 200m freestyle and 5th in the 100m backstroke (qualifying for the Australian team for this event)
• Cam McEvoy – gold in the 200m, 100m and 50m freestyle (withdrew from selection for the Australian Short Course team to focus on training)
• Sho Nishimoto, who along with teammates Cam McEvoy, Brayden McCarthy and Elijah Winnington won bronze in the 4 x 100m medley relay
