Bond Bullsharks claim victory in AFL Queensland's Alpha Sport Pre-Season Cup

Bond University's AFL team, the Bond Bullsharks, have claimed their second trophy in under six months, winning their eight team pool in AFL Queensland's Alpha Sport Pre-Season Cup.

The Bond Bullsharks were crowned champions after defeating Pine Rivers by 71 points in the grand final at Leyshon Park, Yeronga on March 28.

The Alpha Sport Pre-Season Cup was launched this year by AFL Queensland, with 32 teams from across the State competing in four pools in the three week long knockout event.

The victory comes on the back of last year's premiership win for the Bond Bullsharks in the 2014 QAFA (B) South competition, the first premiership win for the club since its formation in 2011.

Bond Bullsharks coach, Sam Whish-Wilson, said the team went into the pre-season grand final as the underdogs, but proved they were a force to be reckoned with in this year's competition.

"Our boys were ready from the opening bounce. We're a fast, young team and this win confirmed we're as hard as any team in the competition," he said.

"Our premiership winning team got together early in the year and set out their plans for the 2015 season, with nearly every player re-signing to the team. That stability and focus really showed in our pre-season final win on Saturday against Pine Rivers.

"In the coming season, we will need to focus on building upon this result and not get complacent, as teams will be coming for us. We have set a precedent and need to keep delivering good results.

"I have so much praise for our supporters off the field who put in a lot of hard work to ensure our football club is a professional, enjoyable environment for players to compete and enjoy the game of AFL."

The Bond Bullsharks will be competing in a tougher division this year, having moved up to the QAFA (A) competition alongside teams from Wynnum, Beenleigh, Victoria Point, Ipswich, Redcliffe, Griffith Moorooka, Carrara, Pine Rivers, Park Ridge and Southeast Suns.

The 2015 season kicks off on April 11, with the Bullsharks playing their first game on April 18 at Bond University against Victoria Point.

Bond University's Director of Sport, Garry Nucifora, said the team's recent win had laid the foundations for an exciting season ahead.

"The Bond Bullsharks have achieved respectable results in their short history as a team, and I look forward to watching their progress in the 2015 competition," said Mr Nucifora.
