A team of 145 Bond Bullsharks put in a top effort to bring home a number of medals from this month's 2016 Northern University Games which was held on the Sunshine Coast.
1,600 students from 11 universities played across 16 different sports and after four days of intense competition, QUT were the overall winners, Griffith University Gold Coast came in second place with University of New England taking third place, and the âSpirit Trophyâ for good sportsmanship and fair play going to University of the Sunshine Coast.
Bond took out third place in the Per Capita Championships, behind UNE and USQ, for the university winning the most pennants per student numbers.
Bondâs menâs futsal team claimed a pennant and gold medal with our Beach Volleyball team and menâs tennis, touch and football teams all scoring silver medals for their impressive performances. The Bullsharksâ golfers, Dennis Joerissen and Sharina Lopez, had stellar performances claiming gold and bronze respectively, while our womenâs netball team performed brilliantly, but finished in fourth position narrowly missing out on the bronze medal.
Joseph McLachlan, Sports Club Coordinator said Bond was well represented by this yearâs Bullsharks and congratulated them on the sportsmanship they displayed, both on and off the field.
âThe Bullsharks teams trained hard for many months in the lead up to these Unigames, so it was great to see them come home with some medals, especially in sports that are relatively new to us at Bond, like futsal,â he said.
âThere was such an amazing team atmosphere at the Sunshine Coast our athletesâ hard work really pay off in their performances on the field,â Joseph said.
âThe Northern University Games provides our student-athletes with an excellent opportunity to meet and compete against some of the regionâs best tertiary sporting teams, and of course have some fun outside the classroom too.â
The Bullsharks will now turn their focus to the Australian University Games which will take place in Perth from 25-30 September.
The 2016 Northern University Games is one of four regional Games held simultaneously across Australia, with a range of sports serving as the qualifying competition for the 2016 Australian University Games which are being held 25-30 September in Perth.
