Bond at the Olympics: Daniel Kowalski

Daniel Kowalski – Swimming – 1996, 2000

Daniel Kowalski

Bachelor Of Health Sciences (Sports Management)

Daniel Kowalski is a two-time Olympian, former world record holder and, at the 1996 Atlanta Games, became the first swimmer in 92 years to win a medal in the 200m, 400m and 1500m freestyle events at the same Olympics.

But he is just as proud of what he achieved in the academic halls of Bond University.

“Completing my degree at Bond was one of my greatest achievements,” said Kowalski, who started his Health Science, Sport Management degree in 1993 and graduated a decade later after juggling his studies with an elite sporting career.

“Even though I was in some of my final years of study, I could have easily dropped out and just stayed in the job I was doing but I realised I didn’t have any real-life experience. I am so glad I followed through on what I started in 1993.”

Kowalski’s maiden Olympics in 1996 saw him famously finish second to Kieran Perkins in the 1500m freestyle, while he also claimed bronze medals in the 200m and 400m. Four years later, he went home from Sydney with gold as a heat swimmer in the all-conquering 4x200m freestyle team.

Having also been a vital member of Australia’s world-record-breaking 4x200m freestyle team at the 1998 Commonwealth Games, Kowalski has dedicated much of his post-sporting career to executive roles that benefit other athletes in navigating their own journeys.
