Australian University Sport crowns Bond 2017 Per Capita Champions

Australian University Sport has announced that Bond had taken out the 2017 Overall Per Capita University title, following an excellent performance at last year’s Australian University Games (AUG) and the standalone University Championships held throughout the year.

Australian University Sport CEO Don Knapp commended Bond University on securing the Overall Per Capita University title - which is awarded to the country’s highest achieving University per student numbers – and explained the importance of recognising elite student-athletes and the professionals that support the dual career education pathway.

“University sport programs play an integral role in ensuring student-athletes are provided the best possible environment for success – in both academics and sport,” Mr Knapp said.

“With the provision of scholarships, access to industry leading training and research facilities and assistance in exams and assignment deadlines, the collective work of Australian University Sport’s members universities ensures student-athletes can pursue sporting excellence while laying the foundation for their long-term future through tertiary education.”

Bond University’s Executive Director of Sport, Garry Nucifora, said he was very proud Bond had reclaimed the overall Per Capita University title for the fifth time.

“Off the back of our continued success at last year’s Australian University Games, this award reinforces Bond University is on track to realising its vision of being Australia’s leading destination for Sports Education,” Mr Nucifora said.

“Size is no obstacle to a university achieving great things in sport and education. At Bond, sport is part of our DNA and we continue to punch well above our weight when it comes to team and individual sporting achievements, and providing a strong pathway for student-athletes who want to achieve in their chosen sport at an elite level and realise their non-sporting career ambitions.

“We welcome and are grateful for this accolade from Australian University Sport, and look forward to another big year taking on the rest of the nation’s top student-athletes and universities at the 2018 Nationals.”
