Adaway does it his way

On Saturday, Brock Adaway can tuck the ball under his arm and burst into space; if he tries that on Sunday, the whistle will likely be blown.

Despite the contrasting demands and rules of AFL and netball, the Bond University student has found a way to excel at both.

The 19-year-old from Cairns is preparing for the beginning of the state-level, M-League men's netball competition this weekend.

While also representing the Bull Sharks men’s reserves, juggling two demanding sports alongside his Bachelor of Laws degree.

While AFL has always been part of his life, netball has emerged as a second passion in recent years, leading him to state-level and eventually opening doors at Bond.

Despite the obvious differences between the two sports, Adaway believes they have more in common than many people realise.

"I think they do complement each other, especially being able to read the game," he said.

"Transitioning the ball down the field or the court is the exact same, and even setting up a defensive press uses the same type of movement."

The challenge comes from finding enough hours in the week.

Brock trains with the AFL squad on Tuesday and Thursday before heading straight to netball training on Thursday night.

Weekends are often spent competing in both sports, with AFL typically played on Saturday and netball on Sunday.

"It's busy, but it works," he said.

The support of Bond University's Elite Athlete Program has helped him balance the demands of sport and study.

"Being able to move my classes around to fit my sports schedule is quite handy," he said.

Now in his second year of law, he has no plans to choose between his two sporting passions anytime soon.

"I like doing both," he said.

"It works in the way that footy goes on throughout the year, and then after footy starts, netball starts. It kind of keeps me busy throughout the whole year."

For Adaway, moving away from home to pursue his sporting and academic dreams has been worth the leap.

"Just go after it," he said.

"Don't let moving away hold you back from where you want to go."
