This subject introduces students to the world of digital design and prototyping using the Rhinoceros software platform and the schools own state of the art Architecture Fabrication and Research Workshop. Rhinoceros is a core software platform utilised by industry for laser cutting, 3d printing, CNC routing, robotics, rapid prototyping and fabrication. Course instruction will be focused upon creating expertise with basic Rhino commands and an introduction to parametric “file to fabrication” workflows. These general strategies for efficient and productive 3d modelling for CNC operations including subtractive processes such as milling and contouring will be introduced through a critical lens.
A strong culture of making and prototyping is emphasised with output to include physical models utilising the Architecture Fabrication and Research Workshop CNC router, CNC mill, and CNC wire bender.

1. Demonstrated application of Nurbs modelling software skills in Rhino and parametric design using Grasshopper. 2. Ability to rapid prototype utilising CNC equipment. 3. Ability to experiment, test and trial various conceptual ideas using digital fabrication.
Assumed knowledge is the minimum level of knowledge of a subject area that students are assumed to have acquired through previous study. It is the responsibility of students to ensure they meet the assumed knowledge expectations of the subject. Students who do not possess this prior knowledge are strongly recommended against enrolling and do so at their own risk. No concessions will be made for students’ lack of prior knowledge.
Familiarity with CAD software or 3d modelling and use of workshop equipment helpful but not required
This subject is not available as a general elective. To be eligible for enrolment, the subject must be specified in the students’ program structure.
