Team Bond Triumph at Uni Games

Bond had its best ever result at last week’s Australian University Games (AUG) taking home 11 Gold medals, 1 Silver and 1 Bronze and the Doug Ellis per capita trophy, which is awarded to the university winning the most pennants per student numbers.

The University of Melbourne were the 2013 Overall Champions, with Bond coming in 9th position; the second best university in Queensland after QUT who placed 8th.

Bond’s Sport and Recreation Manager, Jackie Heffernan said everyone at Bond – athletes, students and staff – were thrilled with the Bullsharks’ achievements this year.

“This is the first time we’ve finished in the top ten universities in Australia and by far, it’s our best performance yet at the Australian University Games,” Jackie said.

“Pound for pound we were the best performing university in the country, and there were so many fantastic achievements by our student athletes in both the individual and team events.

“We had a number of students honoured with Green and Gold selection, in recognition of their individual performance, and our men’s Golf and men’s Beach Volleyball teams are now the number one performing teams in Australian university sports.”

The Green and Gold merit teams are selected to acknowledge, recognise and reward outstanding performances at National AUS events. This year six Bond students were selected in Green and Gold teams:

• Glen Horner – Beach Volleyball
• Amy Levings – Swimming
• Mel Schlanger – Swimming
• Benjamin Green – Mixed Touch
• Sam Simmonds – Volleyball
• Celeste Marsh - Volleyball

“It was great to see our students not only perform so well, but really embrace the essence of the Games by displaying incredible team spirit,” Jackie said.

“Plus, with Bond hosting the volleyball, beach volleyball and water polo events here on campus, we had the opportunity to showcase our fabulous facilities to students from 40 other universities across the country.”

Some of the Bond AUG Team highlights of the week include:

• Golf - Gold Medal (Overall AUS Champions)
• Men’s Beach Volleyball – Gold Medal (Overall AUS Champions)
• Swimming – 7 Gold medals, 1 Silver, 1 Bronze, 2 Games records (3rd Overall - Women’s)
• T20 Cricket – Gold (Division 2)
