This is an opportunity for an experienced and motivated technical manager to join our Technical Services and Facilities Team in a job‑share arrangement (0.4 FTE / 2 days per week). This senior technical leadership role is instrumental in leading the faculty’s technical support for high‑quality, compliant, and future‑ready research environments across the faculty.
Reporting to the Manager, Technical Services and Facilities, you will oversee day-to-day laboratory operations while contributing to planning for future laboratory capability and infrastructure.
Key responsibilities include:
- Lead laboratory operations — guide a small technical team and ensure safe, compliant and high-quality research environments across PC2 and WHS requirements
- Manage laboratory equipment lifecycle — coordinate maintenance, troubleshooting, upgrades and replacement planning, and support capital equipment planning
- Strengthen laboratory processes — review and update SOPs, streamline workflows and maintain consistent operational standards
- Support research capability — train staff and students in cell culture, core laboratory techniques and safe chemical handling practices
- Provide technical guidance — advise researchers on laboratory practices, compliance and effective use of facilities, and collaborate with academic and industry partners
You will build strong working relationships across the faculty to deliver a positive and well-supported laboratory experience for researchers and students.
About the person
You’re an experienced technical leader who thrives in a collaborative environment. With strong communication, organisation, and laboratory skills, you bring a flexible and proactive approach to planning, compliance, and daily operations. Calm under pressure and confident managing shifting priorities, you will help keep the research laboratories operating smoothly and safely while contributing positively within a job‑share partnership. Your ability to build strong relationships, adapt quickly, and maintain high standards of safety and quality make you an excellent fit for this role.
To succeed in this role, you will ideally have:
Postgraduate scientific qualifications in biomedical research (or related discipline) with 3+ years of hands‑on research experience and practical skills in laboratory operations, equipment maintenance and daily workflow coordination.
Strong compliance and safety knowledge, including WHS requirements, PC2 and OGTR standards, AS/NZS 2243 guidelines and the Australian Code for the Care and Use of Animals in Research.
Technical expertise in key biomedical techniques—cell and tissue culture, microscopy, flow cytometry, molecular biology and biochemical assays—along with the capability to train and support students and researchers.
Excellent communication, project coordination and stakeholder engagement skills, with experience managing laboratory resources, financial processes and contributing to continuous improvement initiatives.
