Knowing how to understand, analyse and present data is a key to entry in any industry. This subject requires students to apply the concepts, theories and frameworks from their entire program to a big data research project. Working under the supervision of an academic staff member, students will apply the research process, develop a research question that is relevant to both industry and the academic community, synthesise the relevant literature, use appropriate big data techniques and interpret the results and evaluate their implications. Students may work in teams or as individuals dependant on the size of the project. Projects may be created internally or be sourced from industry.

|Learning Log||Each week students will individually record the progress that they have made, difficulties encountered, their interactions with their team members, and overall progress in a log. Policy on late submission and extensions
A late penalty will be applied to all overdue assessment tasks unless an extension is granted by the subject coordinator. The standard penalty will be 10% of marks awarded to that assessment per day late with no assessment to be accepted seven days after the due date. Where a student is granted an extension, the penalty of 10% per day late starts from the new due date.
Policy on plagiarism
University’s Academic Integrity Policy defines plagiarism as the act of misrepresenting as one’s own original work: another’s ideas, interpretations, words, or creative works; and/or one’s own previous ideas, interpretations, words, or creative work without acknowledging that it was used previously (i.e., self-plagiarism). The University considers the act of plagiarising to be a breach of the Student Conduct Code and, therefore, subject to the Discipline Regulations which provide for a range of penalties including the reduction of marks or grades, fines and suspension from the University.
Feedback on assessment
Feedback on assessment will be provided to students within two weeks of the assessment submission due date, as per the Assessment Policy.

The goal, rationale and structure of the subject are explained, as well as the requirements and expectations for the industry project and related assessments.
Working in groups for extended periods of time can often be difficult and challenging, but ultimately rewarding. Guidance is given to help to ensure that the project is completed on time, with the stated deliverables from a group of co-operating team members. The use and rationale of a peer evaluation system throughout the project is also explained.
The importance and structure of a project proposal or scoping document, for a project, is discussed. Students learn how to plan out a project from the description given by the industry partner so that it may be realised in a single semester’s work with appropriate deliverables. Project management tools such as the Gantt chart are also explained.
These sessions, which normally occur once a week, allow students to present their progress and findings. The academic supervisors and convenor critique, question and guide students to ensure that they are completing the project in a timely manner and with appropriate tools and techniques.
