This subject focuses on Drawing and Visual Communication as critical skills for designers and architects. Drawing is considered in the following terms: -Drawing as a means of accurately representing and interpreting the observed world in a two dimensional graphic format; -Drawing as a means of aiding in the process of design and generating design ideas; -Drawing as a language for the communication of design ideas through graphic means. Students will be taught fundamental drawing skills through a series of technical drawing exercises and assignments. Students will be encouraged to use drawing skills to aid in the creative processes involved in giving form to abstract thoughts and ideas. Using drawing as a tool for communication, students will be exposed to a range of methods of graphic presentation, through diagrams, story-boards, vignettes, tone and shadow, orthographic conventions, life drawing and iterative sketching. Students will also practice the broader Communication skills involved in organizing and making presentations- graphic presentation in the form of a Final Folio of coursework, and verbal presentation in the form of in-class exercises. In addition, students will also be introduced to the relationship between the architect/designer and the ubiquitous sketchbook. This subject runs simultaneously with Design Studio 1, ensuring that the students’ freehand drawing, diagramming and orthographic conventions, as well as presentation skills are synchronized with the content delivery of the studio.
