Professional biography

Dr. Murray is an Associate Professor in International Relations and Diplomacy (Bond University, Australia), a Global Fellow at the Academy of Sport (The University of Edinburgh), an Honorary Member of the Centre for Sports Law, Policy and Diplomacy at the University of Rijeka (Croatia), and an Associate Editor of Brill Research Perspectives on Diplomacy and Foreign Policy (Brill, the Netherlands) as well as The Journal of Public Diplomacy (Seoul, Korea). A globally respected writer, speaker, and expert on International Relations, Diplomacy and Sports Diplomacy, he has dozens of peer reviewed publications, over 650 citations, and regularly advises governments, international institutions, and non-state actors on a broad range of matters relating to diplomacy, international affairs, and sport. The Australian Government, The British Council and The Commonwealth Secretariat are three examples of institutions that have recently engaged, and funded, his insight. He also sits on the Boards of Cross Regional Consulting, and the Sports Diplomacy Alliance, two institutions he helped found.

  • Traditional diplomacy (state-to-state)
  • 'New' diplomacies (particularly plural, networked relationships between state and non-state actors)
  • Sports diplomacy: origins, theory and practice
  • Translational research (I have undertaken paid research consultancies with the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, the Australian Department of Health, The Commonwealth Secretariat, Sportanddev.org, AusAid, the Australian Grand Prix, the Sports Diplomacy Foundation, and many others) 
  • Innovations in the theory and practice of International Relations (anthropology, philosophy and digital revolutions)
