The Bull Sharks have tuned-up for their Charlotte Caslick Cup defence by continuing their 2023 winning streak with victory in the 32nd Byron Bay 7s tournament at the weekend.
Following two days of heated matches that featured 20 of Australia’s top teams, it all came down to a nail-biting grand final where the Bull Sharks faced the Easts Tigers.
“It had been pretty even throughout the whole match but the defining moment was when Easts were attacking and had the opportunity to win the game,” women’s 7s coach Lawrence Faifua said.
“Lucky for us we managed to get a turnover and with very little time remaining, one of our speedy young girls ran through and scored a try, winning the game for us.”
Falling victim to the Tigers 21-28 during their pool round only sweetened the Bull Sharks’ 21-14 grand final victory.
"It was great that we were able get on top of them in the one that mattered,” Faifua said.
“I’m super proud of our girls for such an outstanding performance. Having quite a young team, I thought they all stood up, particularly in the finals.”
But the Bull Sharks' 7s journey is far from over.
Their next challenge is the Charlotte Caslick Cup, where Bond’s women are the reigning champions.
This tournament will kick off in the Bull Sharks’ backyard on October 28-29 when they host the opening round.
Next will be the Brisvegas tournament from November 3-5, followed by the Queensland 7s State Cup.
Each of the three tournaments serve as an opportunity for teams to earn points towards the Caslick Cup.
"I'm hoping I can lead the Bull Sharks to the same victory we experienced last year,” Faifua said.
“We were fortunate to take the double whammy, winning both the State Cup and the Caslick Cup.
“We're a much younger team this year but while we’ve lost a lot of experience, our younger ones are looking in really good form."
