General information

This subject introduces students to the applied social psychology of the workplace with special attention to the psychology of individuals at work and their interactions with others. Topics include communication and socialisation in the workplace; the use of psychological tests and interviews in the workplace (in selection, placement and commitment); psychological aspects of work conditions and accidents at work; and personal attributes and their effects on groups, and on conflict and stress management in the workplace. This subject aims to develop a critical thinking perspective on issues and findings in organisational psychology.

Attendance and learning activities: Lectures and tutorials will include exercises related to the workplace, including interviewing, completion of questionnaires and use of case studies to increase self-understanding and understanding of the workplace. Completing and applying knowledge and skills learned from these activities would impact positively on personal learning and more effective interactions in the workplace.

Assumed knowledge:

Assumed knowledge is the minimum level of knowledge of a subject area that students are assumed to have acquired through previous study. It is the responsibility of students to ensure they meet the assumed knowledge expectations of the subject. Students who do not possess this prior knowledge are strongly recommended against enrolling and do so at their own risk. No concessions will be made for students’ lack of prior knowledge.

All Psychology programs are accredited in the sequence presented and designed to provide students with learning and graduate outcomes in line with APAC accrediation standards. In order to meet these outcomes, students in the Undergraduate program should complete PSYC11, then PSYC12, and finally PSYC13 subjects in the order sequenced.

Essay Assignment A 1500 word literature review of one selected area in industrial or personnel psychology- e.g., selection interviewing, conflict management, team-work, psychological testing, organisational citizenship behaviour. A literature review is a summary of the major research and practical findings in the area or topic selected; it also indicates what is yet to be resolved, what are difficulties in previous studies, and what directions future research and application should follow. Usually some 12-15 relevant articles and texts will be referenced for a good Credit level to be achieved. The best marks are awarded to students who can critically comment on the main issues covered. Note that p 35% Week 8 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6.
Paper-based Examination (Closed) Final Exam. The exam will be on material covered since the earlier examination. The examination will include a mix of multiple-choice, short-answer and essay questions. 30% Final Examination Period 1, 6.
Paper-based Examination (Closed) Mid-term Exam 1. The examination will include a mix of multiple-choice, short-answer and essay questions, on weeks 1-6. 35% Week 7 (Mid-Semester Examination Period) 1, 6.

Assessment criteria

High Distinction 85-100 Outstanding or exemplary performance in the following areas: interpretative ability; intellectual initiative in response to questions; mastery of the skills required by the subject, general levels of knowledge and analytic ability or clear thinking.
Distinction 75-84 Usually awarded to students whose performance goes well beyond the minimum requirements set for tasks required in assessment, and who perform well in most of the above areas.
Credit 65-74 Usually awarded to students whose performance is considered to go beyond the minimum requirements for work set for assessment. Assessable work is typically characterised by a strong performance in some of the capacities listed above.
Pass 50-64 Usually awarded to students whose performance meets the requirements set for work provided for assessment.
Fail 0-49 Usually awarded to students whose performance is not considered to meet the minimum requirements set for particular tasks. The fail grade may be a result of insufficient preparation, of inattention to assignment guidelines or lack of academic ability. A frequent cause of failure is lack of attention to subject or assignment guidelines.

Quality assurance

For the purposes of quality assurance, Bond University conducts an evaluation process to measure and document student assessment as evidence of the extent to which program and subject learning outcomes are achieved. Some examples of student work will be retained for potential research and quality auditing purposes only. Any student work used will be treated confidentially and no student grades will be affected.

Policy on late submission and extensions

A late penalty will be applied to all overdue assessment tasks unless an extension is granted by the subject coordinator. The standard penalty will be 10% of marks awarded to that assessment per day late with no assessment to be accepted seven days after the due date. Where a student is granted an extension, the penalty of 10% per day late starts from the new due date.

Policy on plagiarism

University’s Academic Integrity Policy defines plagiarism as the act of misrepresenting as one’s own original work: another’s ideas, interpretations, words, or creative works; and/or one’s own previous ideas, interpretations, words, or creative work without acknowledging that it was used previously (i.e., self-plagiarism). The University considers the act of plagiarising to be a breach of the Student Conduct Code and, therefore, subject to the Discipline Regulations which provide for a range of penalties including the reduction of marks or grades, fines and suspension from the University.

Feedback on assessment will be provided to students within two weeks of the assessment submission due date, as per the Assessment Policy.

Subject curriculum

An introduction to the workplace, its people management activities and how we 'fit in' is given. Exploration activities of our own qualities that affect our workplace performance including personality attributes are introduced.

We examine job requirements, and finding and selecting staff via interviews and selection testing

Taking the organisation forward through appraisals of performance and training and related experiences that help us improve our performance and contributions.

We outline several important or influential theories about motivation at work, and complete 1-2 questionnaires that indicate what our main motivations might be.

Interpersonal and personal communication skills are addressed and practice in interviewing performance (as interviewer and/or interviewee) is given

These two significant aspects are discussed, with attention to the qualities that are demonstrated in different circumstances. Indications of the skills needed and how to develop them are outlined

Organisational change is constant. Principles and Recommendations for effective change processes are outlined

Stress is not uncommon in the workplace. Organisational and personal strategies for handling stress are presented in the topic, including personal assessments of strong and weak areas and what to do about them.

Modern strategies at work emphasise 'positive psychology' including satisfaction at work, happiness emphases, and personal development. We will discuss what psychological qualities at work make a difference including resilience, hope, optimism and efficacy in the workplace
