Professional biography

R. James Ferguson's research and teaching areas include international relations, strategic studies, regionalism, and globalisation. He is the Director of the Centre for East-West Cultural and Economic Studies and Assistant Professor of International Relations within the Faculty of Society and Design at Bond University.

He conducts research and publishes in the areas of Asian, Eurasian, European and Australasian International Relations, Chinese cultural systems, human and comprehensive security, Islamic governance, environmental politics, and regional organisations. Recent work has included an emphasis on international regimes, China's view of regional and global order, and new patterns of global governance. Themes include:

  • International regimes, competition and cooperation
  • China's engagement in regional and global order
  • New patterns of international and regional governance
  • Chinese, Russian and European interactions across Eurasia
  • ASEAN and the Indo-Pacific region
  • Analysis of identity politics and power networks
  • History trends shaping foreign and security policies

He has recently co-authored or written three books: China's Quest for Global Order: From Peaceful Rise to Harmonious World, (Lanham: Lexington Books, 2013), The Politics and Philosophy of Chinese Power: The Timeless and the Timely (Lanham: Lexington Books, 2017) and China's Eurasian Dilemmas: Roads and Risks for a Sustainable Global Power (Cheltenham: Edward Elgar, 2018). Through 2018-2019 he is writing a new contracted book, Greening China's New Silk Roads: The Sustainable Governance of Belt and Road.

He has been a member of the International Studies Association (ISA), the refereed International Institute for Strategic Studies (the IISS, London), the International Institute of Development Studies (IIDS) and for several years served as a Council member of the Australian Institute of International Affairs (Queensland). He regularly presents at conferences in Southeast Asia, China, Japan, India, Europe and Australia. He has received grants and fellowships from a number of sources including the Australian Research Council, Ford-IDSS, the Visiting Researchers Program (Walailak University, Thailand), plus grants and donations for research in the Centre for East-West Cultural and Economic Studies and the Global Development Forum.

Teaching expertise

Over 25 years teaching and subject design at undergraduate and postgraduate, plus thesis supervision at all levels in international relations, regionalism, political theory, history, and cultural systems.
