SPEX11-102: Foundations of Exercise and Sport Science January 2020 [Standard]

General information

This subject introduces the student to each of the five major streams of the Bachelor of Exercise and Sports Science program.  The basic principles of anatomy, physiology and biochemistry, psychology, biomechanics, motor control and learning, testing prescription and delivery of exercise programs within exercise and sport science settings will be the focus.  This foundation subject is designed to provide students with both the theoretical knowledge and practical skills required to understand, apply and integrate the basic principles of the five major streams of exercise science as they relate to apparently healthy clients of both genders across the lifespan from conception to old age.

On successful completion of this subject the learner will be able to:
  1. Identify and describe the stages of growth and development across the lifespan in relation to exercise and sport.
  2. Describe and apply recommended and contraindicated exercise testing, prescription and delivery principles for each stage of growth and development.
  3. Identify and apply the origins and insertions of the lower limb musculature.
  4. Describe the structure and function of the neuromuscular, sensory and endocrine systems in relation to the exercise response.
  5. Apply basic exercise and sport science screening, testing and prescription procedures to diverse population groups.
  6. Identify and assess populations at risk of insufficient physical activity or sedentary behaviour, including consideration of the social determinants of health, to inform development of appropriate interventions.

Assessment criteria

High Distinction 85-100 Outstanding or exemplary performance in the following areas: interpretative ability; intellectual initiative in response to questions; mastery of the skills required by the subject, general levels of knowledge and analytic ability or clear thinking.
Distinction 75-84 Usually awarded to students whose performance goes well beyond the minimum requirements set for tasks required in assessment, and who perform well in most of the above areas.
Credit 65-74 Usually awarded to students whose performance is considered to go beyond the minimum requirements for work set for assessment. Assessable work is typically characterised by a strong performance in some of the capacities listed above.
Pass 50-64 Usually awarded to students whose performance meets the requirements set for work provided for assessment.
Fail 0-49 Usually awarded to students whose performance is not considered to meet the minimum requirements set for particular tasks. The fail grade may be a result of insufficient preparation, of inattention to assignment guidelines or lack of academic ability. A frequent cause of failure is lack of attention to subject or assignment guidelines.

Quality assurance

For the purposes of quality assurance, Bond University conducts an evaluation process to measure and document student assessment as evidence of the extent to which program and subject learning outcomes are achieved. Some examples of student work will be retained for potential research and quality auditing purposes only. Any student work used will be treated confidentially and no student grades will be affected.

Policy on late submission and extensions

A late penalty will be applied to all overdue assessment tasks unless an extension is granted by the subject coordinator. The standard penalty will be 10% of marks awarded to that assessment per day late with no assessment to be accepted seven days after the due date. Where a student is granted an extension, the penalty of 10% per day late starts from the new due date.

Policy on plagiarism

University policy on plagiarism defines plagiarism as taking and using another person's thoughts, ideas or writings and passing them off as one's own. The University considers the act of plagiarizing to be a breach of the Student Conduct Code and, therefore, subject to the Discipline Regulations which provide for a range of penalties including the reduction of marks or grades, fines and suspension from the University.

Feedback on assessment will be provided to students within two weeks of the assessment submission due date, as per the Assessment Policy.

Subject curriculum

You will meet the teaching staff within our exercise and sport science program. The assessment for the subject will be discussed in detail as will the staff and student expectations for both this subject and the whole Exercise and Sport Science program. We will examine in detail the different stages of growth and development as they relate to both exercise and sport science.

The foundation principles of physiology and biochemistry related to exercise and sport science will be examined. The major physiological and biochemical changes that affect exercise and sport performance through the stages of a lifetime of growth and development will be examined.

We will examine key components of human cells and the role of the various cellular components in the response to exercise and sport.

1, 4.

The anatomical foundations of exercise and sport science will be examined with an emphasis on the structure and function of the lower limb. The major anatomical changes that affect exercise and sport performance through the stages of a lifetime of growth and development will be examined.

1, 3, 4.

The foundation principles of neuromuscular physiology including sensory feedback, proprioception and reflexes related to exercise and sport science will be examined. The major neuromuscular changes that affect exercise and sport performance through the stages of a lifetime of growth and development will be examined.

1, 4.

The foundation principles of hormonal control of exercise and sport science will be examined. The major changes that affect exercise and sport performance through the stages of a lifetime of growth and development will be examined.

The foundation principles of psychology related to health, exercise and sport will be examined. The major psychological changes that affect health, exercise and sport performance through the stages of a lifetime of growth and development will be examined.

The foundation principles of biomechanics related to exercise and sport science will be examined. The major biomechanical changes that affect exercise and sport performance through the stages of a lifetime of growth and development will be examined.

The foundation principles of motor control and learning related to exercise and sport science will be examined. The major changes in motor control and learning that affect exercise and sport performance through the stages of a lifetime of growth and development will be examined.

Integrating the knowledge and skills using the different sub-disciplines of exercise and sport science in developing exercise programs for apparently healthy clients across the lifespan and different stages of growth and development will be examined.

The foundations of exercise testing, prescription and delivery across the different stages of growth and development will be examined.

The determinants of health, the social-ecological determinants of physical activity and food will be examined. Agencies and programs focused on increasing physical activity, exercise and sport at both population and community levels will also be examined.
