LAWS77-734: International Financial Systems Law

Description

International Financial Systems Law is an elective subject in postgraduate programs offered by the Faculty of Law. The topics to be covered in the subject include the causes of the global financial crisis, the law and legal environment within which financial systems operate internationally, global regulators and supervisors, emerging global trends including the Islamic banking and finance, international prudential standards and governance, and the current global issues on frauds, international crimes, money laundering and combating the financing of terrorism.

Learning outcomes

  1. On successful completion of this subject students will have acquired a sound knowledge of: the principal global financial systems and their interrelationship; the development of those financial systems over time and recent crises therein; the global regulation of and current issues affecting financial systems; the regulatory options facing the international financial system as a system, and emerging markets from nations individually.
  2. Students will be trained to critically analyse and evaluate the consequences of activities and current events affecting the international financial system.
  3. Students will be able to conduct advanced independent research and write a research paper on a contemporary topic regarding the international financial system.

Assumed knowledge:

Assumed knowledge is the minimum level of knowledge of a subject area that students are assumed to have acquired through previous study. It is the responsibility of students to ensure they meet the assumed knowledge expectations of the subject. Students who do not possess this prior knowledge are strongly recommended against enrolling and do so at their own risk. No concessions will be made for students’ lack of prior knowledge.

Juris Doctor students are expected to have completed a minimum of 80 credit points of compulsory law subjects.

Restrictions:

Students must be admitted into a Masters law degree OR LA-43040 Doctor of Legal Science (Research) OR be an approved Law Study Abroad OR Law Exchange student.

This subject is not available as a general elective. To be eligible for enrolment, the subject must be specified in the students’ program structure.
