LAWS13-574: Litigation Clinic

Description

Litigation Clinic is an elective subject in undergraduate programs offered by the Faculty of Law.  This subject will expose students to general public interest law issues through service at the Self-Representation Service operated by LawRight. This clinical subject provides a unique and valuable opportunity for students to develop practical legal skills, become familiar with the litigation process and establish networks with legal practitioners from a wide variety of law firms, including major national law firms. The subject also provides students with an opportunity to gain experience in the community legal sector and an understanding of the importance of pro bono legal work.

Learning outcomes

  1. Demonstrate knowledge of the key features of civil procedure as it applies in the Queensland and Federal civil jurisdictions.
  2. Demonstrate competency in exercising a range of both oral and written practical legal skills within the context of a community legal centre.
  3. Adhere to the common standards of professional and ethical behaviour while working autonomously, collaboratively and reflectively.
  4. Apply legal research skills and methodologies within the context of a critical reflection.

Assumed knowledge:

Assumed knowledge is the minimum level of knowledge of a subject area that students are assumed to have acquired through previous study. It is the responsibility of students to ensure they meet the assumed knowledge expectations of the subject. Students who do not possess this prior knowledge are strongly recommended against enrolling and do so at their own risk. No concessions will be made for students’ lack of prior knowledge.

Students are expected to have completed at least 80 credit points of compulsory law subjects

Faculty approval is required. Students must be admitted into a Bachelor law degree or Bachelor of Laws combined degree.

This subject is not available as a general elective. To be eligible for enrolment, the subject must be specified in the students’ program structure.
