Entrepreneurial ventures need capital to support their business models, grow market share and create shareholder value. This subject explores the core considerations in addressing the financing needs and challenges to support the launch and growth of new ventures. Major topics include investment analysis, capital structure and valuation. Financing options available to new ventures at various stages of development are examined in depth. The criteria used by investors, debt financiers and other players in the capital market are also considered.

Policy on late submission and extensions
A late penalty will be applied to all overdue assessment tasks unless an extension is granted by the subject coordinator. The standard penalty will be 10% of marks awarded to that assessment per day late with no assessment to be accepted seven days after the due date. Where a student is granted an extension, the penalty of 10% per day late starts from the new due date.
Policy on plagiarism
University’s Academic Integrity Policy defines plagiarism as the act of misrepresenting as one’s own original work: another’s ideas, interpretations, words, or creative works; and/or one’s own previous ideas, interpretations, words, or creative work without acknowledging that it was used previously (i.e., self-plagiarism). The University considers the act of plagiarising to be a breach of the Student Conduct Code and, therefore, subject to the Discipline Regulations which provide for a range of penalties including the reduction of marks or grades, fines and suspension from the University.
Feedback on assessment
Feedback on assessment will be provided to students within two weeks of the assessment submission due date, as per the Assessment Policy.

An overview of the subject and introduction to venture finance theory.
An overview of debt finance and the requirements that banks & other debt financiers have. The advantages and disadvantages of debt from an entrepreneur’s perspective will also be examined.
An overview of equity finance and the requirements that investors have when assessing investment prospects and ultimately placing investments.
An overview of the fundamental valuation techniques that entrepreneurs and investors use when assessing company values. The principles of risk and return and how differences in valuation between entrepreneurs and investors can emerge will be covered.
Seed funding, angels and other early stage funding. Funding is evaluated through the different life cycle stages that growth companies go through as they expand.
Considers private equity and other late stage sources of funding that entrepreneurs can take might utilise and why. The private equity industry and its business model is also examined.
Different scenarios for structuring deals between entrepreneur and investor will be examined. The documentation used will also be covered so that students will be familiar with different clauses and terms used when constructing a deal.
Looks at the different exit strategies available to entrepreneurs and earlier stage investors. IPO, merger and acquisition examples will be covered in detail.
