This subject provides an introduction and basic training in the verbal and non-verbal skills which have been shown to enhance effective counselling outcomes, a professional behavioural plan for effective data-gathering, and an examination of several of the major therapy approaches.

1. Describe and differentiate between major theories of counselling taught in class and apply knowledge on theories to solving practical class exercises;
2. Demonstrate effective verbal communication during class-based discussion and well-developed written expression in completion of assignments as these abilities relate to the content taught in class;
3. Practice the decision-making process for identifying the most suited therapeutic approaches for addressing the presenting issues outlined in a demonstrated Intake Counselling session.
