COLB12-400: Design Studio


Design Studio is a 40 credit point subject allowing students to develop a customised solution in response to a real-world issue within the local community. Throughout a semester-long applied project, students work full-time in interdisciplinary teams applying the design thinking tools, methods and mindsets acquired within previous subjects whilst collaborating with expert coaches, mentors and a team of interdisciplinary educators. Focal elements of the subject include developing a shared understanding through empathising with the diverse positions and interests of key stakeholders, considering multiple perspectives, generating and exploring creative ideas, making and learning from mistakes, questioning implications and adaptively planning for the implementation of validated solutions.

Learning outcomes

1. Identify and define a problem or need from a user perspective in an applied context 2. Effectively use rapid prototyping in order to gain and use feedback and iteratively test and refine possible solutions to a defined need 3. Work collaboratively to generate and implement creative ideas 4. Plan for the implementation of a designed solution, outlining resource needs, timelines, risk management considerations and related details in an applied context 5. Evaluate personal work and that of others to provide useful and constructive feedback enabling continuous improvement and learning 6. Critically reflect on and learn from personal experience and feedback from others to enable continued development
