Professional biography

Robert trained at Clifford Chance, London, before specialising in intellectual property with US firm Covington & Burling, and then environmental law at Ashurst, Sydney and Travers Smith, London. As a senior lecturer at the University of Law in London from 2007-2012, Robert taught across the GDL, LPC and LLM. He also contributed to pro bono activities, organised annual fund-raising fetes and authored the Environmental Law chapter for the Commercial Property Textbook. Robert then focussed on law and international development work. He was a capacity building expert with the Centre for International Legal Cooperation (based in the Hague), with a long-term appointment as a trainer to Uganda’s Law Development Centre. He was Head of Learning for Advocates for International Development, coordinating and presenting lawyer and student programmes and working groups. Robert was also a consultant to Amnesty on Business and Human Rights, Thomson Reuters TrustLaw on Social Enterprise, and the full-suite pro bono charity Carbon Leapfrog (London) on community and renewable energy projects throughout England. Since 2018 Robert has focussed on global citizenship, sustainable development and social innovation education in business and law, in London and now Bond University, where he has designed and taught three new courses since 2020. His PhD, research, design and teaching interests include ESG in legal practice and legal education, along with social science insights of human nature, cultural norms and social networks. In addition to law, Robert specialises in teaching sustainable development, behavioural economics/psychology and sociology.
