He completed his PhD at the University of South Australia, and continues to study students' motivation and successful second language acquisition.

Research interests

I joined Bond University as a student for my Master of Arts in Applied Linguistics. After I completed this degree, I commenced my doctoral research studies, and joined the Faculty as an academic staff member. I completed my PhD at the University of South Australia, and continue to study students' motivation and successful second language acquisition.

My continuing research interest is second language learners' motivation and the factors which could influence the learners' motivational predispositions. I have been investigating how learners' motivation changes due to what causes.

Currently, I am researching to find the relationship between the motivational elements, such as target language/culture, teachers, teaching methods, and surrounding people, and the learners' cultural background as well as the educational context. I have focused much on formal second language education in Australian context, and I am planning to extend the research in the international contexts.

Masanori specialises in second/foreign language acquisition theories, especially in LOTE (Language Other Than English), Japanese and English (EFL).

Statement for HDR students

I offer HDR supervision on any study relating to the broad theories of second language acquisition.

Students who are interested in the complex mechanism of individual learner differences, and their success or failure in second language learning are most welcome.

I am especially interested in HDR projects that are related to second language learners' motivation and how it is affected by learners' cultural/educational backgrounds.
