Clair Duffy

Clair worked as a federal prosecutor (for the Commonwealth DPP) in Brisbane and Melbourne (2000-2005), prior to taking up a position at the United Nations International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, in Arusha, Tanzania, where she worked first as a judicial advisor, and subsequently as a prosecution appeals counsel (2005-2010). She went on to work for two international human rights organisations (Open Society Justice Initiative, and the International Bar Association) in Phnom Penh (2010-2013), and in The Hague (2013-2014), monitoring the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia and the International Criminal Court, respectively. After almost a decade working internationally, Clair returned to the Gold Coast in late 2014. She began teaching in the Faculty of Law in 2015. Clair teaches Queensland Evidence law, as well as Criminal Law and Procedure, as core subjects. She also teaches International Criminal Law, which is an undergraduate law elective. In addition to this, Clair runs the faculty’s Human Rights Clinic, and has coached both Jessup and International Criminal Court moot teams. She received teaching excellence awards from the Law Students’ Association in both 2019 and 2020. In 2002, Clair was admitted as a barrister in the Supreme Court of Queensland. She was subsequently admitted as a barrister and solicitor in the Supreme Court of Victoria in 2003, in which year her name was also entered into the Register of Practitioners of the High Court of Australia. She speaks fluent French, and intermediate level Spanish.
