Bull Sharks bring home national title at Homecoming

Bond University has kicked off Homecoming 2021 by winning the AON Women’s Uni7s rugby competition on home turf.

The Bull Sharks raced to a 22-0 lead in the final against Griffith University with a Maddison Levi double in the first-half spearheading Bond’s charge.

In what is their first national title, Bond beat Griffith 29-7 to raucous applause from the Fabian Fay Clubhouse.

“It is unreal to win the national title,” Bond University captain Emily Bass said.

“We didn’t perform on day one and we had to come out here today and redeem ourselves.

“We had to play with heart and the girls certainly did that.

“I’m super proud. I’ve been here since 2017 and this group is special. We’ve never had this much talent come through the ranks.

“To win at home in front of our family and friends is unbelievable.”

A blistering start helped the Bull Sharks thump Sydney University 36-5 in a crucial knockout game on Sunday morning.

Three tries in the opening five minutes effectively killed the contest, with Bond’s power and hard running proving too much for Sydney.

The Bull Sharks backed it up with a gutsy 19-5 win in the semi-final against UTS.

Bond defended heroically on their own line, with key turnovers and a standout performances from the Levi sisters settling the home side and earning them a place in the final.

Bachelor of Sport Management student Caitlyn Costello also had a massive Sunday, with some crucial hard-hitting tackles shifting momentum for Bond.

Coach Setu Nasiri said: “It is surreal. I’m happy for the group of players because it’s been a big commitment for this group and the staff and their families.

“Not just good footy players, but great people.”

Sisters Maddison and Teagan Levi were named in the All-Stars team after leading Bond to the historic title.

The win launched a big week for the University and its alumni.

Homecoming, from May 15-23, is a series of sport, educational and social events with alumni travelling back to the campus to reconnect with friends.

In recognition of international border closures much of the program is also online this year. For details go to:
