Bond entrepreneurship students reach for the stars with Space event

The Bond Entrepreneurship Collective (BEC) has secured two of the country’s leading space industry experts to participate in a panel event this Wednesday evening (4 July, 2018) in the Bond University Transformer space. 

‘Space, The Next Step’ will see James Gilmour, Co-Founder and Director of Gold Coast-based Gilmour Space Technologies and Kirby Ikin, Chairman of the National Space Society, explore the evolution of the space race over the past 50-plus years and the opportunity for Australian start-ups to become involved in the Space industry in the future.  

The student-run event also features an exhibition of incredible prints from the NASA archive, an hour-long video and a 700kg ‘Mercury Space Capsule from James Gilmour’s personal collection - an exact replica of one of the capsules from NASA’s first mission into space.  All these items are currently on display in the Transformer space at Bond Business School.

BEC President, Haydn Shaw said he thought the Space Race was a topic that was relevant and of interest to a broad cross-section of the community.

“The viability of commercialising space is become real, and a lot of young entrepreneurs, and members of the public are interested about where Aussies are heading in the space race and how they can get involved,” he said.

Fellow BEC member, George Cary said the event gives him the opportunities to combine two of his greatest passions – space and business.

“A lot of people are fascinated by space, but don’t understand what space companies do. James and Kirby are experts in their fields and keen to raise awareness of the sector,” he said.

George and other members of the University’s Transformer program first met James Gilmour when they participated in a student experience day at Gilmour Technologies’ HQ at Pimpama.

“We were interested to learn what they’re doing and how they do things. James and his team were keen to connect more with students and he invited Kirby to be involved in our speaker panel event – which is a huge coup for us.”

The event, which kicks off at 6.00pm with canapés and networking and runs through to 8.00pm, is free to attend and open to students, staff and members of the public - however registration is essential, as tickets are limited.
