Bond University’s 2022 Queensland Premier Rugby campaign kicks off this weekend with the Bull Sharks playing away against the Sunnybank Dragons.
Experienced first grade coach Grant Anderson is once again at the helm, with newly appointed assistants Andrew Fraser and Damon Virtue bringing a fresh perspective.
The first grade side will be led by Dan Boardman with some notable recruits alongside him including Hayden Sargeant who is back at the club after spending three seasons with Sunnybank. Jayden Ngamanu also comes into the squad after returning from Japanese club Yamaha Jubilo.
The forward pack has been boosted with frontrower Rhys Sheriff arriving at Bond after playing for Eastwood in the Shute Shield. Dynamic forwards Marlon Jones and Sam Kelly-Knowles coming through colts will be ones to watch throughout the season.
Another key part of Bond’s attack in 2022 is Liam Dillon, with the crafty halfback returning to The Canal for his third season with the club.
Head coach Anderson believes Dillon will be one to keep an eye on during the season. “He’s one of the best players in the competition and will be looking for another big season with the club.”
With Bond having the bye in round one, the club will be away from home four of the first five weeks. Coach Anderson acknowledges the tough draw to start the season but says it’s all about consistency for the first grade side.
“I’d be lying if I said we aren’t out to win every game but it’s about being consistent in the way we play and just taking each game as it comes,” he said.
The Women’s Premier Rugby team will be motivated to go one better in 2022 after falling just short in the semi-finals last year.
The strength of the women’s program has already been on display with nine squad members featuring in the Queensland Reds Super W side this year.
The women’s side will again look to play the elusive, exciting style of rugby the squad was renowned for last season.
Head coach Setu Naseri believes the point of difference gives Bond the best opportunity for success in 2022.
“It’s clear we are a smaller side compared to the other premier clubs so using that to our advantage and playing that expansive style of rugby is the best fit for us,” Naseri said.
The Bull Sharks will get the season underway against the Sunnybank Dragons in round 2 with the first home game coming in round 3 against the GPS Gallopers on May 7.
